Mythic Guide – Nightfall

After slogging your way through ONI Sword Base, you’re probably ready for a break. Have no fear; Nightfall is by far the easiest mission in the Halo Reach campaign to complete on the Mythic difficulty. We’re going to speed-run our way through this mission. If everything goes well, you should be able to complete Nightfall in under 5 minutes!

The route I take through Nightfall is full of risks. In all likelihood, you will need to retry the mission many times before you make it through safely. I don’t normally like taking risks during a Mythic run, but because this mission is so short, we can get away with it just this once šŸ™‚ To make things even better, all the risks we need to take are in the first half of the mission.

Watch the video to see how it’s done.

Now that you’ve watched the video, let’s go through the mission one section at a time.

Alone in the dark

You’re going to begin the mission by sprinting up the cliff edge. As you round the corner, you will see an elite with his back to you. Ignore him. Run past him to the right, keeping enough distance so as not to draw his attention. Be carefull not to bump into the sleeping Grunts as you go… you don’t want to wake them up.

Keep running straight along the cliff edge, ignoring the Covenant troops to your left below. You are now running straight towards the first compound, which is being patrolled by Grunts, Jackals, and Elite General, and several invisible Elites with beam rifles. Hug the cliff wall on the right hand side as you draw closer. Clearing this section safely is a bit of a coin toss. If you’re lucky, the Beam Rifle Elites won’t notice you as you approach the compound. Still keeping to the right, jump down from the ledge and run towards the 2-story building in front of you. Jump onto the balcony than runs the length of the building, and dash along it. Stay on the balcony as it curves to the right. If you’ve managed to get to the curve without taking any hits, you should be able to make it completely around the corner and safely out of sight. If you’re not lucky, you’ll get gunned down real fast. Oh well…. we’re only 30 seconds into the mission.

If you do make it through the first compound, you get just a few brief seconds of peace before heading into the most risky section of the entire mission. As the balcony rounds to the right, you will see a doorway directly in front of you down at ground level. Go through that doorway and turn to your left. You should now see a doorway that leads to a second compound area. There is a health pack on the wall to the left of the doorway.

Carefully approach the doorway, and look slightly up and to the left. Across the courtyard you will see an Elite patrolling along a balcony. Beside him is a Grunt controlling a stationary turret. This Grunt is the one and only target you’re going to need to shoot in the entire mission, but you need to be quick. Zoom in with the sniper rifle and take him down. The moment he drops, sprint out the door and head to the left. You are aiming for the valley path that leads out of the compound. Hug the left wall as you move.

You are going to draw a lot of fire the moment you set foot outside. Like the first compound, you’re success here is very much dependant on luck. However, there are still steps you can take to give yourself a fighting chance. As you run, try to add a slight side-to-side sway to your path. This will help dodge some of the fire coming from behind you. Also try to place the forklift between you and the enemies at your back, to shield you from some of their attacks.

Run straight towards the portable drop shield in front of you, and jump over it. A Grunt and a Jackal will appear from around the corner in front of you. If you’re feeling confident, you can smack one of them with a melee to recharge your shields. If not, simply jump clear over them and continue to sprint through the canyon.

The Rancor Pit.

If you’ve made it this far, give yourself a big pat on the back. You’re not out of the woods yet, bet the worst is definitely behind you.

As you continue to move forward, you will see a large clearing ahead of you. In that clearing is a small squad of Covenant troops being ripped apart by 2 giant Guntas. Once again, all you need to do is run. Stay to the left and sprint as much as you can. Your enemies will be too busy with each other to pay much attention to you. When you get to the far end of the clearing, you will see a tunnel path slightly to your left. A few Grunts might cross your path at this point. Melee them if they get close enough. Otherwise, just keep sprinting past them until you’re safely in the tunnel.

The tunnel drops off into a deep trench. You are now approaching the site of the “Waterfront” firefight map, where a group of local militia are defending themselves from a Covenant attack group. But you don’t care about them right now. Ignore your orders to defend them. Instead, hug the left wall and move around the edge of the environment. Crouch-jump up over the short ledge in front of you, and sprint down into the dried-up river bed that leads to the next area of the mission. You might need to dodge a little bit of fire from a Phantom overhead, but its nothing you can’t handle.

Forky to the rescue

You’re now approaching the Covenant “Pylon” that has been blocking your scanners in the area. This area is also the Powerhouse multiplayer level. There are plenty of Covenant troops patrolling the area, but you have the element of surprise working in your favour. Move to the left, taking care to stay quiet and out of sight. Staying hidden is critical. If you are spotted at this point, all sleeping Grunts in the area will wake up, and you’re screwed. There is a bridge ahead of you, being guarded by a single Elite and 4 sleeping Grunts. Move into position close to the bridge, and wait for the Elite to turn his back to you. Move in behind him and assassinate him. Make sure you jump before hitting him; this will ensure that the Elite doesn’t scream as he dies, waking the nearby Grunts.

Once the Elite is dead, silently assassinate the sleeping Grunts on the bridge. There’s now only 1 thing standing between you and completing the mission: a giant metal door. The only way to open it is to clear the are of all enemies, including the pair of Hunters that get deployed as reinforcements. That doesn’t sound like fun to me. Luckily for us, there’s another way to move forward.

Directly in front of you as you cross the bridge is a Forklift. Get in it. That’s right, you heard me! Climb into the Forklift and drive it over to the metal door. Drive it right up against the door, and turn to the right as you do. Stop when the forklift’s left side is now pressed against the door. Now, all you need to do is exit the Forklift. When you climb out of the Forklift, you exit the vehicle on the left hand side. Because the left side of the Forklift is pressed against the door, your Spartan will be bumped straight through the barrier, landing safely on the other side! You might not make it through on your first try… the Forklift needs to be in a specific spot against the door for your Spartan to pass through. If it doesn’t work the first time, just jump back into the Forklift and try again. You might need to reposition it a few times before it works, but just keep trying until you’re through.

The best part about passing through the door? Not only does it allow you to skip the battle in the Powerhouse area, but it also DE-LOADS ALL OTHER ENEMIES for the remainder of the mission! Seriously! No more Covenant between you and the end. Just run for another minute and you’re through. congratulations!

I’ve tried several times to get past that group of grunts & Elites (where you take out the turret grunt) and always get mowed down as I try to run past. Maybe I didn’t try enough times? it didn’t ever seem to get any better, so I just gave up :*(

That was completly insane, I wish I had read this the week before…got anything on the latest LASO challenge? That was a wicked run, I actually jumped out of my seat when I saw your spartan get out of the forklift and jump through the wall. My friends and I tried this mission for 2 days @ 8 hours at a time and couldnt get past the grunt on the turret fighting our way completly through. Well done!

WOW!!! That was awesome! FYI, I am not very good @ Reach but I am persistent. To complete Legendary Solo it took me 3 hrs. per mission & 3 sessions of 3 hrs. each for the last one! Total = 33+ hours. It was not pretty, but I can say that I did it. look it up on, it’ll be there. The last two (2) LASO’s; 4+ & 3+ hrs. respectively. So when I say WOW, you’ll now I really mean it! Keep on keepin’ on, and thanx for what you do. Thomas. p.s. If you can help me to learn how to send you vids I’m sure I can send you grinner’s.
